Oh, my God. Surely there are more important things for

Congress and the Executive Branch to be spending their time on.

Emanuel also promised to "examine" Congressional legislation that would remove the word [retarded] from federal law.

Retarded is a perfectly valid word in the English language -- and there are surely times when its use is called for -- as in some federal, state, and local laws. There simply isn't a reasonable way to get around its use.

Except for real wimps, I'm probably as attuned to and sensitive to the use of the word retarded in inappropriate contexts as the next guy. (See the forum at the PseudoDictionary.) Yes, Rahm Emanuel's use of the word was inappropriate and uncalled for. But, let's face it, Rahm Emanuel is an idiot.

What up? Am I going to have to quit calling liberals and progressives idiots? . . . No. That will not happen.

January 25 Melba update

I'm keeping The Blog updated with what's going on with Melba. We know she's gaining weight; we think she's gaining muscle mass and strength. Ping me when you get a chance -- she wants to know that you're OK. She heard about three bombs going off in Baghdad and thinks you're at risk -- which, of course, you are.

It's hard to imagine anyone showing more confidence than she does -- although I do have to wonder at times if she's completely rational. Black leather pants to go with the lace jacket -- if Dina returns it. Next, a horse for barrel-racing Melba -- but only if Paula and Kyndal move back to Tulsa. Gotta have someone in the family to take care of the horse, ya' know.

Today: "When we go to New York to visit your friend, I want a pair of leather boots. And a new leather purse. You don't go to New York without leather boots. Maybe [Scott's fiance, since I'm e-mailing this to The Blog to post it] can help me pick out the boots. I don't know what I should get." Fanciful, definitely. Irrational? I'm not going to make that call.

Love,

Dad
